Federal fire career structure (NWCG / DOI). Time to advance varies by experience, openings, and qualifications.

What you'll actually make

$72,832–$94,687/yr

base salary per year Β· GW-9

GW is the wildland firefighter pay scale (new in 2024 β€” it pays more than the older GS scale). The number is the grade β€” higher means more pay and responsibility.

That's the floor. Here's how a year stacks up once overtime (1.5Γ—) and hazard pay (+25% on the fireline) during fire season are added on top of the base salary:

Slow season β€” few, short fires β€” little deployment

Base$83,760
Overtime+$18,121
Hazard+$3,020
Total$104,901

Typical busy season β€” regular fires, steady overtime

Base$83,760
Overtime+$42,282
Hazard+$7,047
Total$133,089

Big fire year β€” heavy deployment all summer

Base$83,760
Overtime+$78,525
Hazard+$13,087
Total$175,371

Estimate, based on the midpoint of this posting's pay range (for salaried roles, overtime is figured at the hourly-equivalent rate). The overtime hours β€” roughly 300 / 700 / 1,300 in a full 6-month season, scaled to the months you pick β€” are modeled on reported earnings.

Want the full pay picture? See how much wildland firefighters make by grade: base, overtime, hazard, incident pay, and per diem.

The big money is for fire work β€” not desk time.

These rules are the same for everyone, rookie to supervisor. Base pay comes from real job postings; the rules below come straight from federal law:

Overtime β€” time-and-a-half

For hours over 40 spent fighting fire. On a fire, even supervisors earn full overtime β€” regular office hours don't count.

βœ“ Federal law: Firefighter Pay Reform Act Β· 5 U.S.C. 5542 β†’

Hazard pay β€” +25%

An extra quarter on top of your pay β€” but only for hours actually on the fire line. Not for office or standby time.

βœ“ Federal law: Federal hazard-pay rules Β· 5 CFR 550 β†’

Incident pay β€” up to $9,000 a year

A daily bonus when you're sent to a multi-day fire away from your home base.

βœ“ Federal law: Incident Response Premium Pay Β· 5 U.S.C. 5545c β†’

Selective Placement Factor(s): This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified. Substantial service in a primary firefighter position. Applicants must have documented prior primary firefighting experience, with substantial service defined as either: At least one full fire season working in a primary wildland firefighting role (e.g., Engine Crew, Fire Effects Crew, Prescribed Fire/Fuels Crew, Hand Crew, Helitack Crew, Hotshot Crew, Smokejumper, Wildland Fire Modules or Fire Suppression Crews, etc.) with a federal, state, tribal, local, or private-sector organization; - OR - At least 14-days of on-the-ground fireline experience (cumulative or consecutive). Prior primary wildland fire experience must be clearly documented in your resume. In addition to the requirements described above, the following additional experience is required. Only experience obtained by 09/11/2026 will be considered. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. Please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. Minimum Qualification At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GW-08 level, or higher, in the Federal service. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. *Applicants must meet all minimum qualification requirements for the position of interest by the closing date of the Job Announcement. Secondary Firefighter Retirement Coverage - Applicants for this secondary administrative fire fighter position under the provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336 (c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412 (d), must possess knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques of wildland firefighting as demonstrated by direct wildland firefighting experience. In order to receive credit, you must provide a written description of your experience in wildland firefighting. Education without hands-on wildland firefighting experience does not meet this requirement. Periods of wildland firefighting experience, gained through militia and rural fire departments, can also be credited. Wildland fire is defined as any non-structure fire that occurs in the wildland. Two distinct types of wildland fire have been defined and include wildfire and prescribed fires as follows: Wildfire: Unplanned ignitions or prescribed fires that are declared wildfires. Prescribed Fires: Planned ignitions. This description includes only fire line experience on a Prescribed Fire; it does not include experience in the planning stages. Prescribed fire experience must be supplemented by fire suppression experience in order to be creditable as previous wildland firefighting experience. Physical Demands: Long irregular hours are required, much of it occurring during periods of fire operations. Frequent standing, walking and long periods outside in high temperatures and direct sunlight may be required while working around multiple arriving and departing aircraft. Activities in and around moving aircraft and other equipment require constant monitoring and alertness for hazardous conditions and safety of personnel. Work in an office environment and long periods of sedentary work occurs when reports and flight records are prepared. Lifting and carrying heavy equipment/materials and operating a variety of hand and power tools is required for base set-up, tear down, and maintenance/repair. Work Environment: Majority of activities are performed in an airbase environment, both inside and outdoors. Extreme variations in temperature and climactic conditions are common. Work requires use of safety equipment including hearing and eye protection and high visibility clothing. Exposed to irritant chemicals is possible. The work involves exposure to operating aircraft that result in high noise levels and exposure to turning propellers, prop wash, jet intake areas and jet-blast, and flying dust and debris. Concurrent movement of multiple mixed aircraft types and service vehicles in the ramp area creates potential for serious accident, injury, or property damage. Fatigue and mental stress could be present due to extensive work periods and emergency nature of work.

Probation/Trial Period Con't: The [probationary or trial] period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider: - your performance and conduct; - the needs and interests of the agency; - whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and - whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service. Under applicable law, the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies, in writing, that the individual's employment should continue and that their appointment should be finalized. In the absence of agency action to affirmatively certify continued employment beyond the probationary or trial period, such appointments are terminated. Upon completion of your [probationary period -OR- trial period] your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.",

Fatigue and mental stress could be present due to extensive work periods and emergency nature of work.",
