Federal fire career structure (NWCG / DOI). Time to advance varies by experience, openings, and qualifications.

What you'll actually make

$62,570–$81,343/yr

base salary per year Β· GW-7

GW is the wildland firefighter pay scale (new in 2024 β€” it pays more than the older GS scale). The number is the grade β€” higher means more pay and responsibility.

That's the floor. Here's how a year stacks up once overtime (1.5Γ—) and hazard pay (+25% on the fireline) during fire season are added on top of the base salary:

Slow season β€” few, short fires β€” little deployment

Base$71,957
Overtime+$15,568
Hazard+$2,595
Total$90,119

Typical busy season β€” regular fires, steady overtime

Base$71,957
Overtime+$36,324
Hazard+$6,054
Total$114,335

Big fire year β€” heavy deployment all summer

Base$71,957
Overtime+$67,459
Hazard+$11,243
Total$150,659

Estimate, based on the midpoint of this posting's pay range (for salaried roles, overtime is figured at the hourly-equivalent rate). The overtime hours β€” roughly 300 / 700 / 1,300 in a full 6-month season, scaled to the months you pick β€” are modeled on reported earnings.

Want the full pay picture? See how much wildland firefighters make by grade: base, overtime, hazard, incident pay, and per diem.

The big money is for fire work β€” not desk time.

These rules are the same for everyone, rookie to supervisor. Base pay comes from real job postings; the rules below come straight from federal law:

Overtime β€” time-and-a-half

For hours over 40 spent fighting fire. On a fire, even supervisors earn full overtime β€” regular office hours don't count.

βœ“ Federal law: Firefighter Pay Reform Act Β· 5 U.S.C. 5542 β†’

Hazard pay β€” +25%

An extra quarter on top of your pay β€” but only for hours actually on the fire line. Not for office or standby time.

βœ“ Federal law: Federal hazard-pay rules Β· 5 CFR 550 β†’

Incident pay β€” up to $9,000 a year

A daily bonus when you're sent to a multi-day fire away from your home base.

βœ“ Federal law: Incident Response Premium Pay Β· 5 U.S.C. 5545c β†’

  • Investigate fires and talk to the public about fire safety.
  • Plan and carry out prevention activities and strategies.
  • Work with the fire team to coordinate prevention efforts.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position you must possess the Minimum Qualification requirements listed below. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected. Selective Placement Factor(s): This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified. 1) Prior Primary Wildland Firefighting Experience: Applicants must have documented prior primary firefighting experience, with substantial service defined as either: At least one full fire season working in a primary wildland firefighting role (e.g., Engine Crew, Fire Effects Crew, Prescribed Fire/Fuels Crew, Hand Crew, Helitack Crew, Hotshot Crew, Smokejumper, Wildland Fire Modules or Fire Suppression Crews, etc.) with a federal, state, tribal, local, or private-sector organization; - OR - At least 14-days of on-the-ground fireline experience (cumulative or consecutive). Prior primary wildland fire experience must be clearly documented in your resume. Note: an IQCS Master Record or equivalent document will not be used to determine or calculate prior primary wildland fire experience eligibility for this requirement. In addition to the requirements described above, the following additional experience is required. Only experience and education obtained by 09/01/2026 will be considered. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. Please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. Minimum Qualification For the GW-07 level: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GW-06 level in the federal service. Examples of specialized experience include: assisting on plans for wildland fire mitigation, assisting in coordination of wildland fire educational programs with other agencies, institutions, and/or communities; assisting in the development and implementation of prevention campaigns for internal and external wildfire causes. IMPORTANT - PLEASE NOTE: There is not an option to qualify for the 0456 series utilizing education at this grade level. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. *Applicants must meet all minimum qualification and selective placement factor requirements for the position of interest by the closing date of the Job Announcement. Secondary Firefighter Retirement Coverage - Applicants for this secondary administrative fire fighter position under the provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336 (c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412 (d), must possess knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques of wildland firefighting as demonstrated by direct wildland firefighting experience. In order to receive credit, you must provide a written description of your experience in wildland firefighting. Education without hands-on wildland firefighting experience does not meet this requirement. Periods of wildland firefighting experience, gained through militia and rural fire departments, can also be credited. Wildland fire is defined as any non-structure fire that occurs in the wildland. Two distinct types of wildland fire have been defined and include wildfire and prescribed fires as follows: Wildfire: Unplanned ignitions or prescribed fires that are declared wildfires. Prescribed Fires: Planned ignitions. This description includes only fire line experience on a Prescribed Fire; it does not include experience in the planning stages. Prescribed fire experience must be supplemented by fire suppression experience in order to be creditable as previous wildland firefighting experience. Physical Demands: The work is primarily sedentary, although a level of physical fitness is required which will allow for work during periods of extended stress and in the field when wildland fire situations arise. During the fire season, extended fire assignments away from the unit may be required under very stressful conditions. Working Conditions: Although work is generally performed in an office setting, intermittent field work is involved. Field work involves exposure to temperature extremes, both from weather and fire conditions where falling trees and the presence of smoke and/or dust conditions create hazardous conditions. The nature of fire investigation work requires that protective clothing (boots, hard hats, etc.) be worn. The incumbent must exercise a variety of safety practices and precautions for the well-being of self and of others.

Major duties

As a Wildland Firefighter (Prevention) your duties will include but are not limited to the following: Serves as an entry-level prevention technician responsible for supporting and implementing wilddifre prevention, mitigation, and education programs. Assists with fire investigations and public outreach. Implements strategies and plans activities primarily in support of a fire prevention program. "QualificationSummary": "In order to qualify for this position you must possess the Minimum Qualification requirements listed below. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST state either \"full-time\" (or \"40 hours a week\") or \"part-time\" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. The incumbent must exercise a variety of safety practices and precautions for the well-being of self and of others.",
