Wildland Firefighter (Helicopter Manager)

Pocatello, Idaho · Forest Service

$67,617โ€“$94,687/yr GW-8โ€“9 Apply by June 5, 2026

Can you do this job?

Pulled from this posting's official requirements โ€” full text below.

Is this entry level? No โ€” it needs prior experience.

This role is further up the ladder. If you're starting out, you'd begin as a rookie crewmember and work up to it. Here's the path:

  1. GW-2 to 4 Entry

    Crewmember (Firefighter Type 2)

  2. โ†“ to move up: Take S-130 / S-190 training, pass the pack test, then put in a season on the line.
  3. GW-4 to 5 Experienced

Senior firefighter ยท squad ยท engine operator

  4. โ†“ to move up: Finish your squad-boss task book (FFT1) plus ICS-200.
  5. GW-6 to 7 Leadership

Squad boss โ†’ engine captain ยท crew boss

  6. โ†“ to move up: Complete leadership task books (crew boss / engine boss) over several seasons.
  7. GW-8/9+ Command this job

Superintendent ยท module leader ยท fire management officer

Specialist track: smokejumper, hotshot, and helitack crews are a parallel path you can jump to after a season on the ground.

Federal fire career structure (NWCG / DOI). Time to advance varies by experience, openings, and qualifications.

What you'll actually make

$67,617โ€“$94,687/yr

base salary per year ยท GW-8โ€“9

GW is the wildland firefighter pay scale (new in 2024 โ€” it pays more than the older GS scale). The number is the grade โ€” higher means more pay and responsibility.

That's the floor. Here's how a year stacks up once overtime (1.5ร—) and hazard pay (+25% on the fireline) during fire season are added on top of the base salary:

Slow season โ€” few, short fires โ€” little deployment

Base$81,152
Overtime+$17,557
Hazard+$2,926
Total$101,635

Typical busy season โ€” regular fires, steady overtime

Base$81,152
Overtime+$40,966
Hazard+$6,828
Total$128,946

Big fire year โ€” heavy deployment all summer

Base$81,152
Overtime+$76,080
Hazard+$12,680
Total$169,912

Estimate, based on the midpoint of this posting's pay range (for salaried roles, overtime is figured at the hourly-equivalent rate). The overtime hours โ€” roughly 300 / 700 / 1,300 in a full 6-month season, scaled to the months you pick โ€” are modeled on reported earnings.

The big money is for fire work โ€” not desk time.

These rules are the same for everyone, rookie to supervisor. Base pay comes from real job postings; the rules below come straight from federal law:

Overtime โ€” time-and-a-half

For hours over 40 spent fighting fire. On a fire, even supervisors earn full overtime โ€” regular office hours don't count.

โœ“ Federal law: Firefighter Pay Reform Act ยท 5 U.S.C. 5542 โ†’

Hazard pay โ€” +25%

An extra quarter on top of your pay โ€” but only for hours actually on the fire line. Not for office or standby time.

โœ“ Federal law: Federal hazard-pay rules ยท 5 CFR 550 โ†’

Incident pay โ€” up to $9,000 a year

A daily bonus when you're sent to a multi-day fire away from your home base.

โœ“ Federal law: Incident Response Premium Pay ยท 5 U.S.C. 5545c โ†’
